Isla Holbox está ubicada en la zona de transición entre el Caribe Mexicano y el Golfo de México, es un area natural protegida que pertenece al area de protección de flora y fauna, Yum Balam. Su extensión es de alrededor de 40 Km de largo por dos km, en la parte mas ancha.
Su diversidad en ecosistemas es un atractivo turístico que enriquece nuestros sentidos y que nos compromete a protegerla, ya que es uno de los recursos naturales que aún se conservan en el planeta.
Aves marinas migratorias, residentes y endémicas, asi como una gran variedad de pájaros con atractivos colores se aprecian en cualquier momento del día.
Hay muchas especies de fauna propias del hábitat de manglares y humedales.
La flora es muy diversa y en ella se encuentran las cuatro variedades de manglar hoy protegido, ademas de una gama de plantas endémicas que le dan una atmósfera exótica a este lugar.
Rodeado por el mar y una laguna de agua salada, sus blancas playas lucen tapizadas por miles de conchitas y caracoles y son también estas arenas, donde una variedad de tortugas llegan, año tras año, a desovar.
Las transparentes aguas son el hogar de un sin fin de especies de peces,
Delfines, el tiburón ballena (que viene cada verano), tortugas, las múltiples especies marinas y tanta riqueza natural concentrada en esta pequeña isla han fomentado este sitio turístico hasta convertirlo en un destino de envergadura internacional.
Pueblo
Al volverse un sitio más reconocido, ha llegado también el desarrollo, aún cuando todavía conserva sus calles de arena y sus casas de madera con techos de paja.
Ya hay cobertura de celular, internet, teléfonos públicos, un cajero automático y carritos de golf (o bicicletas).
No hay bancos.
Se pueden encontrar restaurantes con variedad de comidas. Sitios para bailar, tiendas de artesanias y minisupers.
Qué hacer
Se ofrecen tours para recorrer algunas islas alrededor, como el ojo de agua Yalahau ó Isla Pájaros. Nado con el tiburón ballena. Hay también pesca deportiva, de fondo ó familiar; kayak por los rios que conectan la laguna con el mar; travesias por la playa en bicicleta; paseos a caballo; caminatas a la orilla de la playa ó entre el pintoresco pueblo.

A bit more about Holbox
Isla Holbox is located in the transition zone between the Mexican Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. It is a protected natural area belonging to the flora and fauna protected area of Yum Balam. It is around 40 Km. long and 2 Km. in its widest part.
Its diverse ecosystems are a tourist attraction that enriches our senses and encourages us to protect it, being one of the natural resources that remain untouched in the planet.
Migratory sea birds, both resident and endemic, as well as a wide variety of other birds are seen all day long.
The wildlife that lives in the natural habitat of mangroves and wetlands is amazing. The flora is very diverse, having the four varieties of mangrove, now a protected species, along with a range of endemic plants that give an exotic atmosphere to the place.
Surrounded by the sea and a salt water lagoon, its white beaches are covered with small sea shells and conches. And in these sands, year after year we can see the impressive arrival of hundreds of nesting turtles.
The crystalline waters are the home of a wide variety of fishes. Dolphins, the whale shark (arriving every summer), turtles, multiple marine species, and so much natural wealth concentrated in this little island have made it a tourist spot that is being known worldwide.
The town
With the discovery of the island, came its progress, although the island remains unchanged, with sand streets and wooden houses with thatched roofs.
There is cellular connection, internet, public phones and an ATM (cash dispenser).
Golf carts and bicycles are available for transportation.
There are no banks.
Restaurants to choose, places to dance, art craft shops and mini-supermarkets.
What to do
Tours are offered to visit the surrounding islands, such as the spring of Yalahau or Isla Pájaros (Bird Island). Swimming with the whale shark. Sport fishing, deep fishing or family fishing. Kayak in the rivers that connect the lagoon with the sea, bicycle rides along the beach and horseback riding. Walking tours along the beach or through the picturesque town.
